A New Chapter in Music and Community

Have you ever found yourself tapping your foot to a catchy tune or humming along to a familiar melody? For a group of enthusiastic seniors in Burnaby and the wider Metro Vancouver area, those simple pleasures have blossomed into a full-fledged musical journey. Today, we’re thrilled to announce the formation of the Burnaby Seniors Ukulele Society!

What started as a casual gathering of like-minded seniors, eager to learn the ukulele and sing along to their favorite songs, has now become something much bigger. Under the expert guidance of our wonderful instructor, Gloria Yu, we’ve spent years perfecting our strumming, harmonizing our voices, and bringing joy to others through our performances.

Our Journey So Far

Our group didn’t just sit around practicing alone — we ate what we cooked, so to speak, and took our music on the road! From senior centers to charitable events, we’ve had the privilege of performing for a wide variety of audiences. Volunteering our time and sharing our music has been incredibly rewarding. We’ve seen the smiles on the faces of those we perform for, felt the warmth of their applause, and experienced the deep connection that music can create between people.

These performances have not only brought joy to others but have enriched our own lives as well. Being part of this group has given us a sense of purpose, belonging, and the chance to keep learning and growing, even in our golden years. We like to think that we’ve touched the hearts of our audiences, just as they’ve touched ours.

Why We Decided to Form a Society

As much as we’ve loved our informal gatherings and performances, we felt it was time to take things to the next level. Forming the Burnaby Senior Ukulele Society is our way of formalizing our intent and commitment to this wonderful journey. By establishing ourselves as a formal organization, we can expand our reach and invite more seniors to join us in the fun.

We believe that learning to play the ukulele is about more than just music — it’s about fostering connections, building confidence, and creating a supportive community. It is also a most effective way – by doing instead of just talking – to prove to the world and ourselves that we are fully capable of learning new skills and contributing to society as we have done when we were younger.

Looking Ahead: Our Vision for the Future

With our new status as a society, we have big plans for the future. Our main goal is to continue spreading the joy of music, both within our group and throughout the larger senior community. We plan to hold more outreach events and bring our performances to even more venues, especially those where seniors might need a little extra cheer.

But that’s not all. We also want to encourage more seniors to pick up the ukulele and discover the joy of making music themselves. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or have never strummed a string in your life, there’s a place for you in our society. If you are worried that you are past the point of ever being able to play a killer Beethoven piano piece, don’t. You can rest assured that the ukulele is a good entry level music instrument.

We’re excited to offer lessons and occasional workshops, ensuring that everyone has the chance to learn and grow.

Join Us on This Musical Journey

If you’re a senior – or know one – who’s interested in music, fellowship, and giving back to the community, we’d love to have you join us. The Burnaby Senior Ukulele Society is more than just a group of musicians; it’s a family, and there’s always room for more.

So, grab your ukulele, warm up your vocal cords, and get ready to strum your way into a new adventure with us. We can’t wait to see where this journey takes us next!
